Tom FloydOwner of Pilates Connections, Tom Floyd has taken a long, circuitous route in becoming a Pilates trainer. Beginning his career as an aspiring academician, Tom has a B.A. degree in Communication and two graduate degrees in liberal arts fields. Largely self-taught in computer programming, he has worked in computer-related fields since the early 1990s.Having a life-long commitment to physical fitness, Tom has always pursued a fitness-oriented lifestyle, with experience in long distance running, body building, and yoga. Unfortunately, erroneously ascribing to the adage "no pain, no gain," he managed to injure himself in each of those activities. Add to that the postural-compromising nature of a desk job, he found himself with chronic back and neck pain. By the late 1990s, though "fit" by most people's standards, he was a physical mess, barely able to sleep at night due to ever-present pain. Tom began practicing Pilates in 1999. Through Pilates, Tom found the perfect blend of core strength with flexibility that was so elusive in the other programs he had followed. After just 15 months of training, he felt that his life had taken a new direction, so he enrolled in the Pilates teacher training program at the Pilates Center of Austin. He completed that program in March 2002, earning the certification to teach all Pilates exercises through the intermediate level. Following three additional years of teaching Pilates, in May 2005 he earned his Advanced certification through Power Pilates in New York City. Before Tom established his own studio, "Pilates Connections" existed as a web site, begun during the early days of his Pilates education. The centerpiece of the web site was (and still is!) the Discussion Forum, where Pilates enthusiasts from literally around the world come to discuss their craft. From March 2002 through May 2003, Tom gained valuable teaching experience by working at the Pilates Center of Austin and Full Court Fitness, as well as training clients in his home studio. In June 2003, he accepted an invitation from the owner of Tang Soo Martial Arts Academy to open his own studio there, sharing space with the martial arts school. The arrangement at the martial arts school worked well until both businesses outgrew each other! In July 2004, Tom opened Pilates Connections at its present location in far northwest Austin, near Cedar Park. Tom established Pilates Connections with the philosophy that the clients come first. Observing inflexible, often insensitive, treatment of clients at other studios, Tom vowed to always treat a client in the way he would hope to be treated. Yes, the studio depends on revenue to survive, but it depends on a happy clientele for its revenue and long-term growth! For more information on Tom's background, read his article Sports and Pilates. Vivian FloydA native of the Philippines, Vivian has lived in the U.S. with her husband, Tom, since 1988. Employed in the semiconductor industry all her adult life, she continues to work in that field while also pursuing her interests in Pilates. In January 2004, she began her Pilates teacher training at the Pilates Center of Austin, and finished her certification in April 2005. Since then, she has been sharing in the teaching duties at Pilates Connections, mostly teaching in the evenings and on Saturdays. |
