What Is The Going Rate For Pilates Teachers? (View original topic)

I realise we are all over the map here and some urban centres will probably be more expensive and thus pay higher rates, but what do you think is the average hourly wage for a teacher to teach a private pilates lesson on equipment? Group?

In Toronto, clients usually pay $15 for a mat class, and $25-$30 for an equipment group class. For privates, I've seen everywhere from $60 - $90, but $75 seems to be the most common. Discounts for bulk packages are common, too.

Thanks PC, but I guess I didn't word my question very well. Finding out what studios charge for lessons is as easy as visiting a website. I want to know what they are paying their teachers! It's a bit difficult to go up to colleagues and say "how much do you get?" Since writing, I realized that the rate of pay would also be determined by experience.
So let's say - a senior instructor, with a lot of training and experience - how much would you expect to make per hour as an employee?

The reason I'm asking is because I want to ask for a raise at one of the places I work at - I suspect I'm being underpaid. However, I'd like to have a figure and not just as for any old amount they'd care to give me.
Thanks if you can help!

By coincidence, I just posted a similar question on this board. I was informed that the pay ranges from $20.00 - $50.00, depending on your certification and location. In addition to the response I received, I am going to consult with Pilates teachers whom I know and see what their rate is. I will be happy to share with you what I find out.

Thanks Michele. I will probably work up my nerve to ask a few colleagues. They can only either tell me, or tell me to mind my own business!

Yeah, I would ask other teachers in your area. I suspect many posters will be unwilling to post their pay information publicly. I'm in New Zealand so it's probably not useful to know, but I make a set rate for private and duo clients and a percentage for classes, so that's something I would negotiate for if it applies to you--a full class really bumps up the income.

I asked a colleague and she was very honest in her reply, so I have a baseline to work with. As a studio owner, and also an employee, it's difficult to figure out a salary that I am happy with when someone else is paying the rent, and buying the equipment etc., versus what I charge for a private with my own clients.

Ohhhh... sorry, I totally misunderstood.

Currently I rent studio space, but in the past I've made anywhere from $25 (YMCA) - $150 (private, on-site at a condo) per hour. I don't change my rates based on group class or private client. I would say in Toronto I've found $30-$50 to be roughly the norm, with $40 being the most common.

Thanks, $40 is what I was thinking was a good rate for a private. Semi - 45, group 50, depending on the size of the group. We only have 3 or 4 in our groups because this place is very small.

I hope they agree to pay you what you're worth!

I hope all went well with your negotiations.

Thanks Michele. I am basically away from that studio now till the fall. The clientele is very small and they all take off for their cottages and such. I did speak to the boss and we're going to implement a raise (hopefully) in September when business resumes. In the meantime we're trying to get some equipment updated!
