The Whole Body Vs. Core Debate
Posted 31 Aug 2010
Pilates Pro posted a nice sampling of articles related to, oh, let's call it, "The Whole Body vs. Core Debate" in the August 30, 2010, Core Stability: Myth or Magic? What Does It Mean to Pilates Teachers? Post.
The download for the Lederman article, The Myth of Core Stability, is free. Also, besides the link to the response by the founder of the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute posted by Pilates Pro, you can also find a link to a response by Body Control's Lynn Robinson here.
Btw, I would suggest paying the two bucks and reading the London Times article by Peta Bee. The fair (thank you!) response by Daphne Pena-Higgs, Director of London's New York Pilates gets a thumbs-up, imo.
I thought I'd put up links here to some of the discussions we've had here on the PCDB concerning this issue for those who haven't seen them:
New York Times on Core/Back Care 6/18/09 By taowave
The Whole "flat back", "neutral" Thing... 8/2/09 by DancingPilatesMama
Classical Pilates Instigating/irritating Back Pain? 9/25/09 by pilates07
Pilates Revealed 1/12/10 by Carole Amend (then AASI)
Got Core...are You Sure??? 1/15/10 by taowave
Happy reading!
Have a moving day,

Romana, Africa, And Somatic Integration
Posted 16 Jul 2010
A few days ago, three topics dovetailed in a post I made on the AASI Blog, The Global Pilates Spirit:
1) Romana's Pilates (now merged with True Pilates),
2) the pilates legislative issue in South Africa, and
3) the idea of the "somatic integration" loop.
I'll try to sum it up here, with quotes from the blog in purple; for more links, please go to the blog. Here's how it came about:
First, please give The Romanas Pilates Dvds; considering classical training/info? begun on 4-10-10 by vlissa7 on the PCDB a read. In this post, I made the distinction between three different "loops": learning, teaching, and somatic integration. My desire is always to foster a cooperative, as opposed to competitive, mindset.
Being that it involved Romana, this discussion was another one of those controversial threads. Siri made the comment, "There are more Romana teachers out of the loop than in the loop. Don't get looped in."
The reality is, however, that whether in or out of the Romana "loop," all teachers can still consider themselves part of the "teaching" loop. There are those who would consider themselves in the "learning" loop, that is, the public, and those getting ready for pilates teacher training. Conceptually, the "teaching" loop is a section of the "learning" loop.
Pilates is about seeing the whole. Even if you have die-hard loyalties and need to maintain requirements as set by the organization with which you wish to identify, you can still consider yourself part of the greater pilates community.
Recent events in South Africa concerning pilates and fitness legislation created an opportunity to put this idea into context (Please see my AASI Contributions Blog entry Legislation: South Africa).
At the legislative level, there's really no time for bickering over whose training program is the best. The main thing is to declare pilates as a discipline unto itself. So, I do hope that you will read my post on the AIM Academy Forum, URGENT: Call to Action from SAPEPA and please sign the petition.
Finally, SAPEPA member Yasmin Lambat's suggestion to "have a separate Movement Education Board that includes representatives from Every discipline to regulate the industry" is an example of opening the loop beyond pilates. I call this the "somatic integration" loop, a community committed to human evolution through somatic practice. AASI is a community of dialogue committed to this idea. See the blog for links to international organizations, which have been envisioned since the 70s, that are designed to support this community at the legislative level.
What's true here is that the mindsets exist, no matter what you call them. And it's also true that not everyone committed to pilates will be passionate about the greater somatic practice community, within which pilates can be viewed to reside. Some will most surely stay within their "pilates" loop within the "somatic integration" loop. To each his own. Hopefully, though, the jargon will evolve enough to support pilates pedagogy in reaching its full potential and benefit to the public. It would be senseless (indeed!) to limit our work to either the fitness or physical therapy realms.
Cheers!

South African Pilates Industry Legislation
Posted 14 Jul 2010
Hi all,
Thanks to Alycea Ungaro for posting (on twitter) this link to the July 2010 Pilates Innovation and Evolution E-Magazine! I went though the material, gained further insight from Yasmin Lambat and Renee Watson of the South African Pilates Education Providers Alliance (SAPEPA), and wrote the Legislation: South Africa post on the AASI Contributions Blog. I have done my best to reveal parallels as well as differences between the US and South African government agencies. Included are links to the US's Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) and SA's Organizing Framework for Occupations (OFO), as well as information pertinent to our situation in the US.
Also, here is another link to more info about South African Fitness Regulation News on the Pilatesinfo website, a directory of South African certified pilates teachers. It lists background information as well as a timeline and a summary of the impending legislation. It also lists a facebook group for South African pilates teachers, and states that "it is critical to show support/comment from all the Pilates Instructors in SA."
Once again, this brings up the question to the greater, global pilates community:
What is your opinion about pilates being legislated under a "fitness" heading?
Thank you for your voice!
Carole : )
P.S. I just got word from SAPEPA asking for a call to action.

Would you rather be a link on a chain or a facet on a crystal?
Note: This is a trick question. : )
Please see this post on the Mary Bowen thread to see why.

"Contemporary Contrology"??

It has come to my attention that an attempt at trademarking the term "Contemporary Contrology" has been made.
I made a post today on the AASI Contrology Coalition Blog* in response. Exerpts include:

I believe that an appropriate response to this, at this time, would be to state my deep regard for the term, "Contrology," as it was named and defined by Joseph H. Pilates in his books, Your Health and Return to Life.

I am an independent pilates teacher (practicing since 1981, teaching since 1986), following the work of J.H.Pilates and its evolution. I respect and revere the term "Contrology" and the body of work it represents, by recognizing the original historical publications, Your Health and Return to Life, and by also acknowledging that the credit for naming the term belongs solely to its founder, Joseph H. Pilates. Therefore, I believe that the term should be used only in cases of historical reference to the work of Joseph H. Pilates, without change or addition to the term, and that the term should be assigned solely to Joseph H. Pilates.
Keep the faith,
