The widespread popularity of "pilates" has been used to promote the work of a wide variety of disciplines in the health and wellness industries. Interesting to note is that "movement" practitioners promote themselves and their work by either praising or criticizing the method. And make no mistake, much of the scrutiny of "pilates" has come from within our own community. To my mind, these tactics beg contemplation.
The irony is that no matter who does the criticizing, there is no doubt that the proposed "new" techniques used to remedy neuro-myo-fascial (the "new" buzzword for "musculoskeletal") disorders have, in fact, been derived from the work of J. H. Pilates! It's been suggested here on our professional forum that wherever the method is seen in a negative light, pilates proponents ought to rise up and respond to "attacks" to the method. Hmmm....
My response:
1. Live and Let Live. Do your pilates.
2. Conscientiously work to articulate an entirely new, unique model for defining/clarifying pilates and its pedagogy (an outgrowth of an over 30-year personal and professional practice) for use by pilates teachers and enthusiasts (of course!) as well as all proponents of health and healing through all movement disciplines.
3. Educate the public about ongoing discussions within the pilates community. Start here:
